Known by its registration number, 49 FXN, this celebrated Lightweight E-type has remained active for most of its life, and the exploits of a succession of notable owners form a fascinating aspect of the book…

Volume 2 covers in great details the activity of the air force (Chapter 4), the river flotilla (Chapter 5), as well as the combat operations of the Honvedseg (Chapter 6). 9783935687195Playa Giron : The Cuban Exiles’ Invasion at the Bay of Pigs 1961

In 1961 – two years after a revolution in Cuba overran the government of Fulgencio Batista – a group of Cuban exiles (backed by the CIA) landed on the beaches of the Bay of Pigs in an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro from the new government. After three days of intense fighting on the beaches and swamps around the area, the invaders were defeated by Castro’s forces and most of them surrendered, while a few managed to escape to the ships. Failures in the plans developed by the CIA and the lack of decision by the Kennedy administration were decisive in a fiasco that became one of the most shameful defeats by a US-backed operation in the 20th century.

9781927332085Three Battles of Vitebsk Volume 1

is the first book of three to deal with the battles for Vitebsk in Byelorussia from July 1943 to May 1944. A largely ignored struggle because of the importance of Operation Zitadelle and its aftermath in southern Russia, it nevertheless involved large numbers of German and Soviet troops, resulting in significant losses to both sides.
This volume covers the fighting from September to December 1943, as 3.Panzer Armee desperately tries to defend and fall back to the Panther Line. Initially, although designated as Panzer, the army only had a few assault guns within the new Fallschirmjager-Korps.

9783941437296To the Gates of Moscow with the 3rd Panzer Division

How did the soldiers of the Wehrmacht really experience the attack on the Soviet Union and the battles that followed? Few of the books on the subject of the war in Russia provide an honest answer. This book delivers a real view of events. Assistenzsarzt Dr. Türk’s unabbreviated diary entries from the year 1941, supplemented by documentary supporting text, 40 color maps, and a large number of his colour slides represent a unique documentation.

9781473875326Vickers VC10 – An Icon of the Skies

BOAC, Boeing and a Jet Age Battle. Other books have charted the VC10 in airline life, but this book blends that story with a well-researched tale of corporate and political power play. It asks; just what lay behind the sales failure of the VC1O? Politics played an important part of course, as did BOAC’s tactics, and a ‘who dunnit’ cast of politico-corporate events and machinations at the highest level of society during the dying days of Empire in 1960s Britain.

New Tankograd Titles – Foden, Panzer M48, Einheits-PKW, ESK Mungo, Reforger 87

TANKO 9026British Cold War Military Trucks – Foden

Commercial Pattern Low Mobility, Medium Mobility and Variants The Commercial Pattern Low Mobility; Commercial Pattern Improved Low Mobility; Medium Mobility; and Improved Medium Mobility truck ranges were designed by Foden to meet British Army requirements for road-going cargo, fuel and tipper trucks, off-road-capable tractors, limbers and recovery vehicles, and an off-road variant of the Demountable Rack Offload and Pickup System (DROPS).

TANKO 5064‘Cold War Warrior’ Panzer M 48 – The M 48 in Cold War Excerices with the German Budeswehr

As early as 1957 the modern German Army, the Bundeswehr, began to receive the American M 48 main battle tank. Over the coming 35 years this MBT would be one of the backbones of the Panzertruppe and serve with pride. This publication describes the active service period of the German M 48 MBT and its variants on photographs taken during Cold War exercises thus adding to the technical history of the M 48 already described in Tankograd Special 5011.

TANKO 4021Einheits-PKW – German Standardised Field Cars of World War Two

The idea of a unified design for a military passenger (field) car for the Wehrmacht began to take shape in the early 1930s. The intention was to avoid the many types of different vehicles that were used in the Reichswehr by concentrating on the so-called leichter (light), mittlerer (medium) and schwerer (heavy) ‘Einheits-PKW’ standardised designs. The Einheits-PKWs were in their time technically state-of-the-art and played a vital role from the rearmament of the Wehrmacht up to the first years of World War Two.

TANKO 5065ESK Mungo – Light Protected Vehicle for Specialized Forces

The air-portable Einsatzfahrzeug für spezialisierte Kräfte (ESK, or Light Protected Vehicle for Specialised Forces) Mungo is used to transport personnel and equipment in airborne units of the Bundeswehr, in medical and support units. The Mungo entered service in 2005 and, since then, it has seen active service in Afghanistan and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to the ESK Mungo, the Bundeswehr also procured the Mungo 2 Mehrzweck Multipurpose Vehicle based on the same chassis but fitted with a deposit tipper system.

TANKO 3029Reforger 87 Certain Strike – The Cold War’s Largest Transatlantic Bridge

When REFORGER 87 – Certain Strike was conducted in northern Germany, evidence showed that, in a hypothetical war with NATO, the Warsaw Pact would attempt to break through NATO’s forward defences along West Germany’s eastern borders at their weakest point. REFORGER 87 was highly exceptional as it involved the deployment to Europe of a substantial part of III (US) Corps. As a result it saw the largest number of US Army troops deployed to Europe in a single exercise since 1949. In total, Certain Strike involved about 78,000 troops from six nations, 20,000 wheeled vehicles and 2,200 tracked vehicles.

Panzer Divisions in Battle 1939-45 (Concord series 7074)
By Tom Cockle
Paperback, 72 pages, Black/White photos,colour profiles

"Blitzkrieg”, or Lightning War, was a new concept that Germany unleashed on a series of countries beginning with Poland on 1 September 1939, and continuing into Russia. Panzer-Divisions in Battle 1939-45 examines the role panzers played in WWII through a series of photographs and illustrations. Authored by Tom Cockle, the volume begins with a précis of the various battles and theatres in which German tanks saw combat. This second volume on the topic provides coverage of operations on the Eastern Front, including Operation Barbarossa and Operation Typhoon (the attack on Moscow), and ends with various photos of captured panzers at the conclusion of the war.

The centrepiece of the book is a collection of 16 colour plates by Laurent Lecocq, which offers the artist’s interpretation of how vehicles appeared in reality. This stimulating book will be an asset to any library on German military vehicles.
