TONY BROOKS AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Tony Brooks : Poetry in Motion
Hardback, 272 pages, 273 mm x 215mm. Colour cover, over 250 b&w and colour photographs

It took 15 years of relentless persuasion to convince Tony Brooks, one of Britain’s greatest ever racing drivers, that he should write his autobiography.

Throughout his racing career he shunned publicity, preferring to let his on-track performances speak for themselves. This is why Stirling Moss, on many occasions his team-mate in Formula 1 and sports car races, has described him as "the greatest ‘little known’ driver of all time".

Tony Brooks began his racing career at Goodwood in 1952 at the wheel of his mother’s Healey sports car. Three years later, having never previously sat in a Formula 1 car, he drove a Connaught to victory in the Syracuse Grand Prix, beating the entire Maserati works team. It was the first Grand Prix victory for a British car and driver for 31 years. His unique combination of speed and smoothness, aptly chosen by him as his book title Poetry in Motion, led to works drives with Aston Martin, BRM, Vanwall and Ferrari and brought him Grand Prix victories on Europe’s most challenging circuits – Spa, the Nürburgring and Monza. Tony Brooks and his Italian wife Pina live at Ottershaw Park, Surrey.

Previously unpublished, stunning photographs from motor racing history, in a book that examines the many facets of Grand Prix racing before the dominance of television. A beautiful look at a fascinating time in motor racing.

This book is a virtual time machine to the past. It presents stunning – previously unpublished – photographs from motor racing history, and examines the many facets of Grand Prix racing before the dominance of television and commercial advertising. Here are stories of derring-do and racing that constantly pushed the boundaries of technology. The story begins in the 1930s when the German Auto-Unions and Mercedes were heavily subsidised by the Nazi regime to strengthen their engineering might. This produced the most powerful racing cars ever (at least until the turbocharged cars of the 1980s), and which was followed by the postwar era that saw the BRM V16 bringing prestige to Great Britain. Altogether a nostalgic look at a fascinating time in motor racing’s development.

Features:
• Photographs from 1933-1939
• Photographs from 1950-1962
• The Germans and Grand Prix racing before WWII
• The story of the BRM V16 1948-1955

Speedway

Speedway The Classic Era

Britain went crazy for speed in the first half of the twentieth century. On land, at sea and in the air, the exploits of the daring gripped the nation.
Speedway arrived from Australia in 1928, at just the right moment to exploit an insatiable demand for motorsport thrills. Early amateur events soon gave way to a fully-professional sport, with a strong emphasis on entertainment.
Crowds flocked to major stadia, including the Crystal Palace, Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, Manchester’s Belle Vue and Wembley’s Empire Stadium. Written off by sceptics on many occasions, speedway has weathered many ups and downs during its eighty-plus years.
Speedway The Classic Era covers the sport’s first four decades, starting with its early mushroom growth and the subsequent development of league racing, a World Championship, and test matches pitting England against Australia.
It chronicles the sport’s almost miraculous survival during World War Two, and its astonishing impact in the immediate post-war era, when eleven million people watched racing at its UK peak in 1949.

Sidecar Champions

Sidecar Champions since 1923

Sidecar Champions is the ninth in a series which sets out to cover the world’s leading motorcycle competitors. It is also the first to cover more than a single personality in one book. It has also been the most difficult project that author Mick Walker has undertaken during what is now over a quarter of a century of writing.
There are no less than 26 chapters, plus his usual trademark boxed-sections covering several other notable sidecar competitors. It was also a subject which he had wanted to cover for many, many years, because he had always thought that the sidecar boys (and a few girls!) seemed to get a raw deal, both with the organisers and the press, when in actual fact the sidecar event was often the highlight of a days racing and were generally loved by spectators.
